Talk about being better!!!! A couple of Winter Sports are leaving their mark on Smith High this season. The Wrestling Team who failed to win a match two years ago managed to get a spot in to State Playoffs for Dual Team Wrestling, for the first time in years. They played their playoff games on Tuesday. Entering #2 The Eagles traveled to Davie County for this match. They beat Charlotte Independence: 54-23 and then they would have to take on Davie County High entering with a record of 28-3. They lost and finished the regular season at 33-6 but hey not bad for a program that went 9-18 last year. They are now in the process of getting ready for Individuals, Regionals'.
Speaking of Regional Games, the Men's Swim Team are swimming in State Playoffs for the first time since the '90s. The Eagles under Coach Tara Pidgeon qualified for Men's 200 Yard Medley Relay as well as the 200 Free. The swimmers who qualified are Malik Norwood, Jordan Bullock, Christian Evans, Tommy Gallagher, and Michael Nguyen. They will represent Ben L. Smith Saturday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center starting around 4:15-4:30 pm. For the 4A Regional Swim Meet. As a matter of fact, the whole game was great for the girls despite the, 45-36 loss to Southeast. The Girls entered (5-13;0-6) while the Falcons entered leading the conference at (15-4; 5-1) and in what many people thought was going to be a blowout and easy win for the Falcons, it turned into a ball game. The score was tied 10-10 at the end of the first quarter and the Eagles were down by 3 at the half, 2018. They found a strong Falcon team in total disarray as the Falcons struggled to find a rhythm on Offense despite getting a lead, they were never really comfortable and the Golden Eagles seemed more relaxed. No attitudes, no players fouling out. It was the first time in a while that many people have saw the girls play a complete game. So when the clock hit 0.0, the Eagles had nothing to be ashamed of. Destiny McCullough led with 11 for Smith. Tamani manning led with 9 becoming clutch at the line. Let's hope the Eagles will continue to play like this but get the win when they travel to Page Friday.
Scoring Summary 1 2 3 4 Final BLS 10 8 7 11 36 SEHS 10 11 16 3 45 Meanwhile the Boys was everything it was going to be. A dismantlement of Southeast High and Southeast has had a rough season starting with a losing streak since the end of the season last year and they failed to win a game so far this year. This was coupled with several players being kicked off the team and injuries, the Falcon only had 2 guys on their bench, the third was injured. The first half was when the Eagles got the foundation for this game, which would eventually be ran on the running clock. The Eagles found success, sharing the ball and making shots while Southeast failed to get a rhythm on Offense and played Defense most of the night. The Eagles got to a 46-12 lead at halftime but not after Jacob Crutchfield hit 3 threes and Desmond Sturdivant got some points. Everyone playing in a Smith Uniform got to score even, Kenshay Stewart getting the layup. After halftime it would only get worse, for the Falcons, as the Eagle would got to rout Southeast, 77-26. Raymon Pratt led with 17 points. Aaron Simpson right behind with 10. Kendric Lowe with 4 before he was fouled out and newcomer, Luis Garcia with 5. The Eagles go to (11-10; 4-3) before they go to try to beat Page at Page on Friday. Let's hope that the team remembers the good things they did during this game and not everything that happened. By the way, Page beat Grimsley 74-48 Scoring Summary 1 2 3 4 Final BLS 32 14 16 15 77 SEHS 10 2 8 6 26 The girls JV Season has had a rough season. New Coach, new players and they knew that going up against Dudley was going to be a fight. Well, instead of a fight, this turned into a rout... of the Eagles. The game turned in the Panthers favor the minute they got possession of the ball, going on a 17-0 run in the first quarter until 2:11 left in the first quarter thanks to a layup by D'Asia Holt. However, that still didn't helped while the Eagles scored just 1 point in the second quarter. Just 1 point in 8 minutes. The Halftime score was 36-6/ Dudley. After halftime, the Eagles would score no points in the third and score the most points they had all game up until that point. 7 points. The Eagles drop this one, 57-13 when it's all set and done. D'Asia Holt led the Eagles with 4 points.

The Eagles scored the first basket, Shaquice Futrell, but the Eagles would have a hard time shaking off the Panthers who would try to come back outscoring Smith, 15-13 in the 2nd Quarter. Eagles lead by 1 at the Half, 29-28. The back and forth shootout would continue in the second as the Eagles led 47-45 going into the fourth. The fourth quarter a good offensive effort by Darryl Cooper and defensive effort by the team would give a lead, not a good lead but a sizable lead. as they go on to win, 71-61 Terrence Burris led Smith Scorers with 16. Tyrell Dumpson and Shaquice Futrell also in double-digit scoring, Dumpson with 13 and Futrell with 15. This is their 3rd straight win beating Grimsley, Southern Alamance, and now Dudley.
